TOP 10 of 2020
Here is a list of my 10 favorite books from 2020
(so far)!
01
Call Down the Hawk
The first in the spinoff series of The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater. Taking a deeper look into the wonderfully complex character of Ronan, I loved this just as much as The Raven Boys, although it is definitely a different style. YA.

02
The Unadoptables
A debut Middle Grade by Hana Tooke. This story is whimsical, heart wrenching, and adventurous in the absolute best way! I loved every single character, every single twist and turn. It is slightly long the age group, but every page is necessary and worth it! MG.

03
Clap When You Land
The third novel in verse by Elizabeth Acevedo. This was the first novel in verse that I've ever read, and I absolutely loved it! Each sister's voice was so distinct, and it was unlike anything I've read before. YA.

04
The Problim Children: Island in the Stars
This book made me cry, and a book hasn't made me cry in a long time. The story line was perfect, character development perfect, emotion to action...perfect! I loved every word! MG.

05
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires
by Grady Hendrix. I was not expecting to love this book, but I did. It made my skin crawl and my spine tingle. It was a completely new take on what we know as vampire in southern, rich suburbia, and I loved it! Adult

06
Monday's Not Coming
by Tiffany D. Jackson. Wow. Just wow. I just didn't see that twist coming. This story was written so tightly and so well, that the surprise was completely a surprise. It broke my heart, and I loved it so much. YA.

07
Gun Love
by Jennifer Clement. A favorite among many of my bookseller friends that I finally picked up this year, and I'm so glad I did. The prose was so dramatic and lovely and beautiful. Every phrase was fresh, and the story line so unique. I like to sell this as a paired back version of Where the Crawdads Sing. Adult.

08
The Invisible Boy
by Alyssa Hollingsworth. This book is important. This author's books teach kids about hard issues in a palatable fun story. I don't want to reveal what the big, important secret is. I'll see if you can figure it out. MG.

09
The Alibi Girl
by CJ Skuse. This was a different read for me, but wow is this author's character building amaaaazing! The story of a pathological liar living in witness protection. I never knew who she really was, and sometimes she was truly despicable, yet at the end of each chapter, I still wanted her to be okay. So well done! Adult.

10
Blood Moon
by Lucy Cuthew. Another wonderful novel in verse, though very different from Clap When you Land. This is a sex positive, feminist, empowering story about a young girl who has her first sexual experience as she starts her period. I wish a book like this had existed when I was in high school. Heck, I wish a book like this had existed when I was in college! Read it, and understand! YA.
